Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a teaching hospital staffed by more than 1,500 Washington University Physicians, the clinical practice for the Washington University School of medicine. The academic medicine partnership has developed many treatments and procedures that are now common across the globe.
Role Purpose
Evaluates diagnostic and intraoperative monitoring of the nervous system, utilizing the following methods: somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials and eletromyography - both triggered and spontaneous. Gain experience and CEUs in preparation for national certification examination (CNIM).
Responsibilities
- Performs preoperative diagnostic assessment including formulating a monitoring plan with the surgeon, reviewing the patient's medical record and practicing the Stagnara exam before initial anesthetization.
- Performs intraoperative nervous system evaluation immediately following operative exposure. This includes obtaining repeatable, reliable baseline data and gathering subsequent data throughout the procedure with regards to departmental protocols. Identifies meaningful data deviations and clearly communicates these changes to the attending surgeon.
- Completes all postoperative documentation. This includes a detailed description of monitoring activities, data compilation and appropriate billing information. Places all documentation in appropriate destination by end of date originated.
- Performs all high volume monitoring modalities and procedures independently. Modalities - somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials and electromyography - both triggered and spontaneous. Procedures (adult and pediatric) - anterior and posterior spinal surgery (cervical, thoracic and lumbar), selective dorsal rhizotomy, spinal cord detethering.
- Performs all low volume monitoring modalities and procedures with supervision. Modalities - cranial nerve monitoring, auditory brainstem response, cortical motor mapping and nerve action potentials. Procedures (adult and pediatric) - complex cranial tumor resection, microvascular decompression, cryo and radiofrequency tumor ablation, peripheral nerve transposition.
- BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification
Preferred Qualifications- Master's Degree
- <2 years of experience
- Certified in Neurophysiologic Interoperative Monitoring (CNIM)
